Final: Part 2

Tell us about the side effects that your digital life is having on your real life, if any. Do you find yourself, for example, feeling left out or jealous of your friends’ activities when you look at Facebook? Are you having trouble remembering material when you interrupt your studying by checking in online? Do you or your parents ever worry about how much time you spend texting or on the Internet?

Like many other teens technology has a negative effect on my life. For example during my computer technology class i find my self busy playing games instead of doing my work. If im not playing games im checking the basketball games highlights, checking scores, or reading NFL articles. I often find myself logging into Facebook maybe 10-20 times a day just to see what people have been posting, such as new pictures, videos, statuses and so on. Technology can also be a distraction, like while doing homework im always texting, and never actually complete the task.
I never find myself jealous of others and the stuff that they post on Facebook. I may think to my self "i wish i could do that" but im never jealous. My parents aren't that concerned but they do monitor my time somedays i may get less time on the computer or the game than other days, and then some days they dont care, they just remind me that i have school in the morning.

Question of the Day

Tell us how you feel about the notion of punishing parents if their children are failing in school. Which of the proposals described in the article, if any, seem sensible to you? That is, should parents be graded, as has been proposed in Florida; forced to do school volunteer work, as has been proposed in Indiana; fined if children are truant, as is currently done in Alaska; or forced to attend parenting classes if the child is in a gang, as is currently done in California? What complications might judging parents in any of these ways raise?

- I think to a certain extent that is may possibly be the parents fault if the student is failing. Maybe its just that the parent works 3-4 jobs and is unable to be there to help with homework. Then it can also be the students fault because it is up to them to complete all assignments in the classroom and also up to them to ask for extra help. I think it would be just wrong to punish the parent for the child's learning ability, what is the child is special needs? will there be exceptions for those parents? Parents shouldn't be fined is their child is truant from school, the fine should be placed directly on the child. Parents whom children are involved in gangs should not be forced to take parenting classes because its not entirely their fault. Teens will make choices (not saying that joining a gang is a right choice) but parents should not be held responsible for all of their child's mistakes. Putting this law into effect will raise a lot of questions on exactly how will this effect the other students who seem to be doing well in school. I necessarily dont think a lot of these choices will effect everyone the same way. It just seems like the blame for failing students had to be placed on someone particular and it was placed on the parents. I think the teachers play a huge part in this effort. If the teachers aren't doing their jobs then how is it possible for the students to pass?

Question of the Day

"Music and Technology"How has technology changed the way people listen to music? What are the pros and cons of these changes?

- Technology has allowed people to preview songs before buying complete album. Just about anything is possible from the computer, buying albums and songs, to just simply downloading without paying. This may actually have a negative effect on the music industry because their music isn't being paid for , instead just illegally downloaded. This also effects the artist salary. With them constantly making new songs, and no one to buy it this would be a con against what technology has done to music. Also some people use the computer to listen to music because they dont have musical devices, they store all their songs on their computer for later usage.

What do you think are the pros and cons of using tablets at restaurants and other retail stores? How do you think this will affect you both as a patron and a worker?

- I think that if this step is taken to put tablets in restaurants instead of people it will limit the amount of jobs available to the people. It would also be able to make the restaurant business more effective if orders are sent from tablets to kitchens. It would have both a negative and positive effect on the overall business not just one store.

Question of the Day

Watch the video and answer the question. Do you think what the girls are doing is just a harmless joke or very cruel? What would you do if you saw someone being made fun of online? Would you say something to the person or persons doing this? What would you do if they asked you to help them? Write a detailed response of at least one paragraph.

- What the girls are doing in the video is very cruel. If i see someone being bullied online i would have to report it to some adult, because its not right. If i saw someone participating in cyber bullying i would confront them about it. I wouldn't even pay any attention to someone if they asked me to participate in cyber bullying. Its a bunch of nonsense and doesn't deserve any attention at all.

Question of the Day

If you were the Principal, what would you do with students that wear clothes that violate the dress code policy? Should there be exceptions to the rule? What do you think would be a fair dress code?

- If i was the Principal i would give out zero day suspensions to those ho deliberately violate the school dress code. There should be an exception to the school dress code. For example when the weather gets warm if the Females are allowed to wear skirts, then why shouldn't the males be allowed to able to wear shorts. The males should not be forced to wear khaki pants all year while the females get to dress and enjoy the weather. This would be a fair dress code if everyone gets to dress for the weather comfortably and come to school and get an education.

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Question of the Day

If you were the Principal, what would you do with students that are constantly late to School or Class?

- If i was the principal i would have teachers look their doors after the late bell rings. Even though teachers already do this i would then have the security guards do full hall sweeps to get all students from the hall. The problem isn't that teachers are not doing theirs jobs but that security guards aren't taking all students to the Discipline office. If the students are late to school i would have them sent back home. All students are responsible for making it to school on time. If they live further than other and have to walk then they should just leave home earlier.

- I think people who dont stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance are disrespectful to the country. How hard is it to stand up for about 30seconds and recite something that is already memorized. I think everyone should stand for the pledge to show respect for their country and the people who served for their rights.

What are some of the problems that you face as teenager as a result of Social Networking? This would include using social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter, Instant Messaging, SMS and or Text Messaging. How does interacting 24/7 affect the way you think and communicate? Does social media affect your school work in a positive or negative way? Do you agree or disagree with the author of this article that Social Networking affects both your writing skills and social manners? What do you think? Make sure to defend your position.

- As a teenager the main problem we face as a result of social networking is the inability to focus on other assignments that we due when on the computer. even then now they have it so notifications come straight to our cellphones. It only causes a huge distraction that we never achieve the goal of completing our homework. We always find ourselves on Facebook checking for notifications, checking our mail, instant messaging, and writing on other peoples walls.
Social networking does affect our school work in mostly a negative way. You find students on phones in the middle of class on Facebook risking getting their phones taken just to check a few messages. Facebook preoccupies a majority of all teenagers as they frantically find a way to waste their time on the computer. Also on social networks, almost everybody uses "slang" and never spell correctly. This takes a negative affect on our school work because we begin to write like we text. No teacher will accept work with words like "skool" "txt" or "wats upp".
I agree with the author that Social Networking affects both your writing skills and social manners.

Would you approve or disapprove if your mother or father were sharing stories about you online – in, say, a blog, or on Facebook or Twitter? What ground rules would you want your parents to agree to? How protective are you of your privacy?
- I think parents have a right to voice their "family-Related frustrations" online because as teens we do the same thing. Now it depends how personal the thing is that their sharing is wether a teen should be concerned. I would disagree depending on the topic, im not saying that its right or wrong but everyone has a right to voice themselves. Some of the ground rules i would have my parents agree to would be, to not list any names, do no give vivid details of wat really happened, etc. Everyone is protective of their privacy so parents should keep this in consideration when speaking about family orientated problems online. It will have a longterm effect on the entire family.

Can a computer beat a human in the most challenging trivia game on TV? Today, at IBM's headquarters in New York, we learned that the answer is yes.

What is Watson? Why is it so much harder for a computer to compete on jeopardy than to play chess? Do you think this is good thing? Will computers like this help or hurt people? What problems can computers solve? Are computers going to take away more jobs? Will computers eventually take over the world? What do you think? Write 3 paragraphs on your blog that support your opinion.

Watson a computer consisting of a roomful of the company's Power7 processors. It has the ability to understand different languages. The reason it is much harder for computer to compete in chess than jeopardy is because most computers lack the ability to do math. Watson on the other hand has the ability to understand sentences and properly answer them. I think this is a great idea that they want to design this computer. I think if the computer is able to beat a person then it is evident that this was a great idea.

I think that computers like Watson will help people. If the computer is used write and not abused of its quality then its would be beneficial to everyone who uses it. The computer is a big discovery in technology field. In terms of it beating a champion in jeopardy, there is only one way to find out. I think that Watson will do big things for IBM. Computers will eventually take away some jobs, but there is always something that a computer cant be designed to do.

I dont think computers will take over the world because they can only do what they were designed to do. If they weren't designed to take over the world, then they wont. Its a strange possibility that computers will begin thinking for themselves instead of following instruction. if this happens then computers will do only what they want.
